Abstract
Purpose: We evaluate the detection rate of Fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/ computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) for urologic malignancy, and we compared this with the detection rates of other clinical cancers.

Materials and Methods: From January 2003 to December 2006, the total number of healthy subjects who underwent 18F-FDG PET/CT was 2,270. The mean subject age was 54.7 (27-68) years and ratio of males to females was 1.3:1. The results of detecting urologic diseases by 18F-FDG PET/CT were compared with the results of detecting other clinical diseases.

Results: Out of 2,270 subjects, 102 (4.49%) urologic diseases were detected on 18F-FDG PET/CT. Renal cysts were found in 61 cases (2.69%), renal stone in 39 cases (1.72%), renal cell carcinoma in 1 case (0.04%) and horseshoe kidney in 1 case (0.04%). The detection rates of other clinical diseases, gastrointestinal diseases were found in 347 cases (15.29%), cardiopulmonary diseases in 194 cases (8.55%), thyroid diseases in 213 cases (9.38%), and obstetric and gynecologic diseases in 114 cases (5.02%). Renal cell carcinoma was detected in only one person, whereas thyroid cancer was detected in 19 cases (0.84%), gastrointestinal cancer in 15 cases (0.66%), lung cancer in 14 cases (0.62%) and ovary and cervical cancer in 11 cases (0.48%). Thyroid cancer was most commonly found and detection rate of urologic malignancy was very low on 18F-FDG PET/CT.

Conclusions: 18F-FDG PET/CT was not superior to conventional imaging modalities for detecting urologic cancer. 18F-FDG PET/CT may have a clinical role in cancer staging and follow-up after treatment.
